Couples Psychotherapy

Couples therapy can be some of the hardest yet most profound work one does. I understand and revere the gravity, complexity, and reward of the process.

Often the focus of couples therapy is on “solving the problem,” but when the underlying causes are not addressed and early developmental trauma is missed, couples can become entrenched in a distressing cycle. The more one understands a partner’s triggers and the history behind them, the more opportunity there is for vulnerability and empathy, followed by deeper connection.

I work actively, intentionally, and collaboratively to understand both the couple and the individuals; the relationship with each another and the relationship with one’s self. I believe that working on the relationship can also provide an opportunity for self-development and a better understanding of and connection to self. Simply stated, couples therapy can be all encompassing.

My couples work is informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), The Developmental Model, and attachment theory. I specialize in the following:

  • Mixed couples: interracial, intercultural, and interreligious

  • Family dynamics

  • Trauma

  • Intimacy

  • Infidelity/transgressions

  • Pre-marital counseling

  • Family planning

  • Separation and ending of a relationship
